December 8–14 is Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek), a global celebration that encourages students, educators, families and community members to explore computer science (CS) and the ways it powers innovation in every industry. This year’s theme, “CS Powers AI Innovation,” highlights how foundational computing skills open doors to understanding and shaping artificial intelligence.
To mark this important week, Gov. Andy Beshear has proclaimed December 9-15 as Computer Science Education Week in Kentucky, recognizing the role computer science plays in preparing students for high-demand careers and strengthening the commonwealth’s tech-based economy.
Computer Science Education: Fundamental for Kentucky Students
For nearly a decade, AdvanceKentucky, an initiative of the Kentucky Science & Technology Corporation (KSTC), has worked to grow high-quality computer science opportunities statewide. AdvanceKentucky advocates for CS education, supports district planning, and provides professional learning that equips K–12 teachers to teach computer science confidently and effectively.
By supporting teachers and expanding computer science opportunities statewide, we’re building the talent pipeline that will fuel innovation, attract employers and keep Kentucky competitive for decades to come. Terry Samuel, KSTC President
KSTC also serves as Code.org’s regional partner for Kentucky, connecting educators with free, nationally recognized training and classroom resources that help more students access computer science in school.
“Computer science is no longer optional. It’s a fundamental literacy for every student,” said Terry Samuel, president of KSTC. “When Kentucky students learn to code and think computationally, they gain problem-solving skills that translate to every career pathway. By supporting teachers and expanding computer science opportunities statewide, we’re building the talent pipeline that will fuel innovation, attract employers and keep Kentucky competitive for decades to come.”
Join a CSEdWeek Event or Try the Hour of AI
CSEdWeek is designed for everyone, from first-time coders to experienced educators. Schools and community organizations across Kentucky and the nation are hosting activities this week, many of them free and easy to join. Families can find local and virtual events through the official CSEdWeek event directory.
This year also features CSforAll’s Hour of AI, a set of guided activities that introduce learners to artificial intelligence through interactive, age-appropriate lessons. Participants can explore how AI works, where it shows up in daily life, and how computer science makes AI possible. Hour of AI activities are available for classrooms, after-school programs, workplaces or anyone at home who wants to learn something new.
How to get involved
Educators: Integrate an Hour of AI or another CSEdWeek activity into your classroom this week and explore professional learning supported locally by AdvanceKentucky.
Families and students: Pick a CSEdWeek event or try an Hour of AI activity together at home.
Community and industry partners: Participate in or host a coding or AI activity, volunteer or share how computer science connects to your workplace and career pathways.
Computer Science Education Week is a reminder that preparing Kentucky’s students for the future starts with access to the skills shaping that future today. With the governor’s recognition of Computer Science Education Month and ongoing statewide leadership from KSTC and partners, Kentucky is continuing to grow a strong, inclusive computer science ecosystem, one classroom at a time.
